One of the better teaching development methods to come out of the standards movement has been literacy maps, graphs showing how strands of concepts can be taught over K-12 to build a framework of understanding we call literacy in a concept.
For an example see the energy concept strand kept online at the National Science Digital Library: http://strandmaps.nsdl.org/?id=SMS-MAP-2246
In 2005 I attended a workshop for developing such maps led by Curriculum Topic Study. I and several other science teachers practiced building such maps.
