In reading about innovative practices in the teaching of science, I've encountered several valuable metrics indicating enhanced teaching. Here is a list which may be used as a guide for lesson planning or an assessment of lesson plans. An excellent lesson plan would not have to include all these qualities, but some of them to some significant measure.
- Students use authentic data.
- Students use tools that scientists use.
- Students use skills that scientists use.
- Students make links between their current work and their past work.
- Students make links between their current work and scientists' work.
- Students consider the history of an idea.
- Students see days/months/years later the import and impact of this lesson.
