In reading about innovative practices in the teaching of science, I've encountered several valuable metrics indicating enhanced teaching. Here is a list which may be used as a guide for lesson planning or an assessment of lesson plans. An excellent lesson plan would not have to include all these qualities, but some of them to some significant measure.

  • Students use authentic data.
  • Students use tools that scientists use.
  • Students use skills that scientists use.
  • Students make links between their current work and their past work.

  • Students consider the history of an idea.
  • Students see days/months/years later the import and impact of this lesson.
  • Students cooperate.
  • Students create knowledge of value to society.
