Physics pedagogy, like many subjects, changed radically in the 1830s. Instruction was formalized, forming lectures, labs, and homework not too far from what we recognize today, moving away from individual and sporadic pursuit. There were also changes to the curriculum, with concerns like mechanics and calculus becoming more a part of physics, as opposed to their earlier banishment to mathematics. (p. 4)
