Apple Display Connector

Early 2000s Apple Studio Displays came with a single cord that connected video, USB, and power to a desktop computer, for the sake of simplicity. The cord can carry a digital and analog signal, the same signals as a DVI cable. It's easy to run a DVI-equipped monitor from an ADB output, one only needs an adaptor that discards the non-video signals. But since the cord to an ADC monitor carries everything, it takes special equipment to run an ADC-equipped monitor from a computer with DVI output. The adaptor sells for over $100. It includes a power supply, a USB cable, and a DVI plug.

A couple of possible hacks enable us to send DVI to an ADC-equipped monitor. They require purchasing a 24V power supply that can supply at least 5.5A (depending on the size of the monitor). The first is making the equivalent of the adapter, as described by Tony in his blog

The second is to cut USB, power, and DVI ports into the monitor itself, as shown by Warrior Rocker in the bit-tech forum:

I think I prefer the second. It's elegant to make the display function physically like most displays, with a power jack and a DVI jack and a USB jack.
