Install a new HD in a 68k Mac

I've received a couple of Mac SE computers without hard drives. I have some SCSI hard drives, so I picked a 500MB drive, formatted it with my G3 Minitower (mistake), and installed it in an SE/30.

I read online that one should use Apple's Network Access Install disk to install system software on a new HD, and I have an external SyQuest drive with System 7.5.3 installer, which comes as 19 disk images from Apple. http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html

The problem is the drivers that Drive Setup on my G3 installed on the drive are not compatible with this older computer, and the Network Access Install disk doesn't come with Apple's HD SC Setup program to format the HD.

There are several solutions:

  1. Use the HD SC Setup 7.5.3 disk that comes as an image on Apple's Older Software page. With it you can prepare the HD and host an installation of the system software from the images.
  2. Put HD SC Setup on the external HD that's holding the images.
  3. Remove software from the Network Access Install disk to make room for HD SC Setup.
